48 Nigerian Prisoners Pass O Level Examination While In Prison

According to the reports, 48 out of the 102 prisoners who took the exam, have passed the General Certificate of Examination they took in the end of 2013.

Emmanuel Bamidele, the Deputy Controller of Prisons, reported that the prisoners were successful in taking the exam in November/December 2013. This was stated to the Ikeja Branch of Nigerian Bar Association, the NBA, on Monday.

Moreover, Bamidele told to the NBA members that: “when they finally regain their freedom, they can seek admission into any university of their choice, since they are awaiting trial.” The NBA members came to prison to present the gifts they prepared for inmates as one of the activities planned in the Law Week 2014.

Lagos Pastor Destroys Neighbour's Car

Live By Examples, A 44-year-old pastor, Daniel Okogie was arraigned before an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday, for allegedly damaging his neighbour's car over parking space.

According to the prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, the accused who lives at No. 55, Olaiya St., Oshodi claimed to be the caretaker of the compound and had instructed the complainant, Mr Vincent Okeke not to park his car inside the compound but outside the gate as only his (pastor) car would be parked inside.

He also threatened Mr Okoye that he'd damage his car anytime he saw it parked inside the compound but the complainant ignored his instruction and did otherwise. On that fateful day, April 19, the Pastor woke up in the morning and broke the windshield of Mr Okoye's Mercedes Benz car for defiling his instruction. Pastor Okogie who is facing a two-count charge of breach of peace and unlawful damage, however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Presiding over the matter, the Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000, with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till May 15, for mention.

Van Gaal agrees to be next Manchester United manager

Louis Van Gaal has agreed a deal to become the next manager of Manchester United, Goal understands. The Dutchman has finalised the terms of a contract with a United delegation headed by the Glazer family in the last 24 hours. Van Gaal is expected to sign a short-term contract of no more than three years and take over at Old Trafford when his stint with the Netherlands national team finishes after the World Cup.

Jonathan commissions N100bn new investment in North East

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, performed the ground-breaking of the N100bn expansion project for Ashaka Cement’s new 2.5million metric-tonne capacity cement production line in Gombe, North East Nigeria. The project, which will be completed within three years, will increase the company’s current production capacity of over one million metric tonnes to about four million metric tonnes while creating a lot of jobs. 

Jonathan, who was represented by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, said the new investment was a testimony of global investors’ growing confidence in the Nigerian economy as well as the Federal Government’s commitment to transforming the Nigerian economy, leaving out no region.

He said this just as he disclosed that Government had commenced plans to bring down the price of cement. The President reiterated that the current administration would continue to provide a conducive environment for industry, trade and investments to thrive in line with his Transformation Agenda.

He said, “The cement industry is a perfect example of the transformation that can happen in an industry based on the focused implementation of a well-thought out policy and a continuous partnership that harnesses the expertise of the private sector and the capacity of the public sector.

“The commencement of the capacity expansion of AshakaCem Plc’s cement production project further buttresses the confidence that global investors have in the Nigerian economy, which is now the largest economy in Africa.”

The President added, “As at 2002, the local cement industry had the capacity to barely produce two million metric tonnes per annum. By the year 2013, this had grown to 28.5 million metric tonnes and we expect the installed capacity to be about 39 million metric tonnes by the end of this year.

Jonathan noted that Nigeria had become a net exporter of cement, saying that “this is something that we all should be proud of.”

He pointed out that the Federal Government had commenced a plan of action that would promote the consumption and export of cement, enhance skills development and innovation in the industry and bring down the price of cement.

He stressed that his administration would continue to provide both the incentives and the conducive environment to make the cement industry globally competitive in line with the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan.

HND/BSc dichotomy to be resolve - Jonathan

The Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, has said the dichotomy between Higher National Diploma (HND) and university degree holders will be resolved soon. The minister said President Goodluck Jonathan has set up a committee, headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, to address the controversy.

Addressing chairmen of the Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics and Federal Colleges of Education in Kaduna during a special retreat, Wike said the SGF and members of the committee met, last week, with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) to resolve the dichotomy.
He said other demands had also been resolved.

According to spokesperson for the Vatican, Cardinal Giorgio Salvadore, the second coming of Jesus, the only son of the God, may not happen now after all.

Cardinal Giorgio Salvadore has officially announced that this years 1,981st anniversary is to be the Vatican’s last in regards to waiting for the Lord to return to Earth. But he urged followers to still continue with their faith, regardless of the news.

Cardinal Salvadore said, "We just feel Jesus is not coming back by the looks of it. It’s been ages like. He’s probably flat out doing other really good things for people somewhere else."

In chapter John 14:1-3 of the Bible, Jesus promised his disciples that he would come again: "There are many homes up where my Father lives, and I am going to prepare them for your coming. When everything is ready, then I will come and get you, so that you can always be with Me where I am. If this weren’t so, I would tell you plainly."

Cardinal explained Jesus’ broken promise saying that he was probably drinking wine at the time when he made the comments. "Having the ability to turn water into wine had its ups and its downs. We all make promises we can’t keep when we’re drunk. Jesus was no different," added Cardinal Salvadore.

The church said it will now focus attentions on rebuilding its reputation around the world, but will keep an optimistic mind for the savior’s second coming.

Heavy rain destroys Kirikiri prison walls

A large number of policemen and soldiers have been deployed in the Kirikiri Maximum Prisons, Lagos, after a rainstorm collapsed its fence last Sunday.

Our correspondent learnt that after the building collapsed, prisons officials rallied around and ordered the inmates into their cells.

It was learnt that the prisons authorities subsequently called on sister security agencies to fortify the prison to prevent a jailbreak.

Some corrugated sheets and wood, it was learnt, had been used in providing temporary cover, while the activities of inmates have been under close watch since the collapse of the fence.

Abducted Girls and their parents threatened to be killed by Boko Haram

Parents of the abducted 234 female students of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State claimed on Tuesday that the Boko Haram sect had threatened to kill them if they failed to stop their search for the abducted students.

The parents, whose identities were not disclosed, spoke on the Hausa Service of the Voice of America, monitored in Kaduna on Tuesday.

They also noted that they had hired no fewer than 100 okada(commercial motorcyclists) to intensify their search for their children but to no avail.

Man United should be ashamed for sacking Moyes - Keane

Keane (former Old Trafford midfielder) believes the club's inability to strengthen in the transfer market last summer has contributed to United’s poor campaign and insists the club have failed Moyes.

Libya deporting Nigerians

Its so sad knowing even Libya plans to expel 271 migrants from sub-Saharan countries in a fresh crackdown on illegal immigration to and through the North African country, state news agency LANA said on Tuesday. The emigrants will be deported to their home countries Chad, Niger, Eritrea, Ghana, Sudan and Nigeria, LANA said, quoting immigration officials. 

 Many migrants from sub-Saharan Africa head to this oil producing country to escape from desperate conditions in their own countries and find work here, or risk the perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe, Reuters reports. Western powers worry that Islamist militants exploit Libya’s turmoil and lawlessness to get training in the vast desert country or smuggle weapons and fighters via its porous borders to conflict hotspots such as Mali, Sudan or Syria.

Okada Man Beats 2 Year Old Son to Death

An incensed crowd, yesterday, endeavored to set a building on Fashola Street, Ejigbo, on fire, where one of its inhabitants was claimed to have beaten his two year old child to death.

The suspect, identified as Oni Mama, a business motorcyclist, was asserted to have covertly buried the remains of his child around the territory.

Report said the boy, evidently hungry, was seen yelling and pursuing his father who was about moving out on his motorcycle, last Friday.

Out of resentment, his father was said to have dragged him inside and professedly hit him a few times until he passed on.

Report said Oni Mama was later seen conveying a sack trickling with blood out of the building, ensuing whereupon inquisitive occupants alerted the police at Ejigbo.

As stated by reports, the suspect’s wife left him few months prior for another man in the same Orilowo Ejigbo area.

From that point forward, the youngster was apparently left under the watchful eye of any accessible neigbour, while his father went out to work.

Policemen at Ejigbo Division were said to have gone by Oni Mama’s one room loft and directed a hunt. Be that as it may their discoveries couldn’t be ascertained.

Forensic Experts Probes In The Forest Of Horror, Soka, Ibadan

 

 A team of experts from the University College Hospital, Ibadan, and Nigeria Police from Abuja began examining the Soka “forest of horror”, where dying men and women were rescued and decomposing bodies and human parts were found.

The police team of pathologists and the police team of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrived at the site about 11 am on April 7, 2014, Monday.

According to Police spokesperson, Olabisi Ilobanafor, they were there to exhume the bones of victims buried at the site for forensic analysis to help investigation into the activities in the forest.

Situations in Nigeria is getting worse, Now facing the Military Sectors, Yesterday April 7, 2014 At Agbara customs checkpoint along Badagry Expressway, Lagos, 10 men posing as Army officers were arrested by Military Police. Some of the suspects were wearing Army uniforms, camouflage, cap and vest.

It has been learn that some of the persons arrested were impersonating army officers, while others were actually officers, but were supposed to be off duty.

Nigeria Army & Boko Haram Working Together In Parts of Nigeria?

 A Nigerian soldier says he has witnessed incidents that suggest some Nigerian military commanders are working with Boko Haram, an Islamist militant group blamed for thousands of deaths since 2009. In an exclusive interview with VOA’s Hausa service, he described how his military unit, based in the northeastern Borno State region, was ambushed by Boko Haram fighters. The soldier, who did not want to be identified, said the commander of a nearby military unit, based in the town of Bama, recently sought assistance from his unit in carrying out a raid. The soldier said when the two military units joined up, they were given different uniforms. The Bama unit commander gave his own troops green uniforms. The soldier said his unit received tan “desert camouflage” uniforms.

Nigeria among 5 Countries with World’s Largest Number of People Living in Extreme Poverty

The World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim, while addressing participants at the Council on Foreign Relations, CFR, meeting in New York on Tuesday April 1st, said five countries, including Nigeria, make up two-thirds of the world’s extremely poor people.

“The fact is that two-thirds of the world’s extreme poor are concentrated in just five countries – India, China, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“If you add another five countries — Indonesia, Pakistan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Kenya – the total grows to 80 percent of the extreme poor.”

“By extremely poor, we mean people living on less than $1.25 a day. And more than a billion people in the world live on less than that each day.”

Officials of the State Security Service paraded a Catholic priest and 20 others for their alleged involvement in child theft in Akwa Ibom State on Tuesday. SSS Deputy Director, Fubara Duke, said Rev Okono Joseph of St Peter’s Parish of the Owerri Catholic Diocese in Imo State, was arrested for buying two boys (three and four years) at N900,000. Fubara Duke, who spoke at DSS headquarters in Uyo, said the self-styled man of God bought the children in a secret deal from an agent sponsored by one Uche Joel Canice Onyekedru from Ogiri in Imo State. He said the kingpin of the syndicate, Onyekedru, can’t even remember the number of kids he has sold:

Bus Conductor Jumps Into Atlantic Ocean After Stealing N40,000

A 26-year-old bus conductor, Nurudeen Suleiman, who allegedly jumped into the Atlantic Ocean after stealing N40, 000, was on Tuesday charged before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of stealing before Magistrate Salama Matepo.

Ojukwu Bags In Posthumous Doctorate

The late Biafran leader, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, is to receive an honorary doctorate in law (Hon. LLD) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Africa’s richest woman, Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, is also to receive a doctorate in Business Administration.

CBN On Fire

The Lagos State office of the Central Bank of Nigeria is on fire. The fire started at about 5:40 PM at the top most part of the building. Men of the Lagos Fire Service and other emergency agency officials are said to have arrived the scene.

The over 50 year old building is located at the Tinubu area of Lagos Island. It is situated opposite the Stock Exchange office on Custom Street, Marina. The building used to serve as the bank’s headquarters before the Federal Capital Territory was moved to Abuja.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
